A Lodge of Freemasons in the heart of Westminster since 1878

Welcome

Friendship, integrity and good fellowship

Pimlico Lodge No. 1772 is a Craft Lodge under the United Grand Lodge of England, working within the Metropolitan Grand Lodge of London. We meet at Freemasons' Hall in Covent Garden, the home of English Freemasonry. Since our consecration on 3rd October 1878 we have welcomed men from every walk of life who share a wish to become better people, to support one another and to give back to the community around them.

Whether you are already a Freemason looking for a London home, or simply curious about what Freemasonry is, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Heritage

Nearly a century and a half in London

Pimlico Lodge was born in the age of gaslight and Cubitt’s white stucco terraces. Its story is one of steady friendship carried down the generations.

  1. 1878

    Consecration

On 3rd October 1878 Pimlico Lodge was consecrated by Bro. John Boyd, acting under the authority of the Grand Master. It was, he told the brethren, the first Lodge he had ever consecrated.

  2. 1878

    The founding brethren

Bro. John Palmer, a Past Provincial Grand Senior Warden of Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, was installed as first Master, with Bro. Caleb Holden as Senior Warden and Bro. John Hunt as Junior Warden. The Ebury Lodge of Instruction met every Thursday evening at the same house.

  3. 1878

    A charitable beginning

At the banquet that followed, speakers urged the young Lodge to support the great Masonic charities — a commitment to benevolence that remains at the centre of Lodge life.

  4. 1959

    Into the modern age

A printed summons for the meeting of 1st October 1959 survives today in a Masonic library collection — one small record of more than a century of meetings.

  5. Today

    Pimlico Lodge today

We meet at Freemasons' Hall in Covent Garden, welcome new members, and support charities across London and beyond, carrying the traditions of 1878 into a new century.

What we stand for

Four principles, one Brotherhood

Integrity

We are honest and fair, and we try to do the right thing in our work, our homes and our communities.

Friendship

Lodge brings together men who might never otherwise meet, and turns acquaintances into lifelong friends.

Respect

We welcome men of every background and belief, and treat each other — and everyone — with courtesy.

Service

Charity is at our heart: we support one another and give generously to good causes across London.

Pimlico, SW1

Rooted in a remarkable corner of London

From 1825 the master builder Thomas Cubitt laid out Pimlico’s grid of garden squares and gleaming stucco terraces between Belgravia and the Thames. Half a century later our founders met among those same streets — and the Lodge has carried the name of this handsome neighbourhood ever since.

  1. Get in touch Send us a message using the form below. There is no obligation.
  2. Meet us Join some of the brethren for an informal drink or dinner so we can get to know each other.
  3. Apply If it feels right on both sides, you will be proposed and seconded and meet a small interview committee.
  4. Initiation You are welcomed into the Lodge as an Entered Apprentice — the start of a lifelong journey.
Who can become a Freemason?

Any man aged 21 or over (younger in some university lodges) of good character who believes in a Supreme Being, whatever his religion. Freemasonry is not a religion and religion and politics are never discussed in Lodge.

Is Freemasonry a secret society?

No. Our aims, our rules and our meeting places are public, and members are free to say they are Freemasons. Only the traditional modes of recognition are kept private.

How much time does it take?

The Lodge meets four times a year at Freemasons' Hall in Covent Garden, followed by dinner. Many members also attend a Lodge of Instruction to practise the ceremonies, but you take part at whatever pace suits you.

What does it cost?

There is an initiation fee, an annual subscription and the cost of dining. We will explain the current figures when we meet. Charitable giving is always voluntary and within your means.

I am already a Freemason. Can I join or visit?

Certainly. Visitors are warmly welcomed, and brethren from other Lodges may join us as joining members. Please get in touch with the Secretary.
